Don't know your plans for length of stay and activities. That time of year has big swings in temperatures and weather particularly in the mountains vs: plains. You can expect anything from sunshine to snowstorms.
Typing in google for example "October weather averages in Idaho" will find some good reading material. Most tourist types of stuff really slows down after Labor Day if you're trying to avoid it.
Are you planning to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon? Checking out the mountains and canyons, digging for Dinosaur ruins or dune buggy/dirt bike rides or hiking in Idaho? I liked Mt. Rushmore in Keystone and visiting Deadwood for a little gambling and reinactment in Saloon #9 of Wild Bill Hickok's shooting. Boot hill has his gravesite next to Clamity Jane. I enjoy cowboy and any kind of History.

You may want to consider September instead. Weather is a little more predicatable in your favor then. North Dakota is pretty simple for weather in October. It could be in the 70's and sunny. You could get a snowstorm. It's a crap shoot. I'd also look at what you want to do as many touristy stuff shuts down after Labor Day weekend.
I have a friend that does a Black Hills motorcycle trip the weekend after Labor day as the weather is usually decent, stuff is still open, but the crowds aren't there.
Having lived in Norther Idaho, I'd say you'd be ok depending on what you want to do. Probably early for skiing. But the mountain passes may get snow, may be fine. Check the elevation of what/where you want to go. It will be cold the higher you go. Otherwise, Idaho is beautiful country. Hiking would be good as long as the weather holds.

I live in Idaho and traveled the northwest extensively before I retired in 04. October was my favorite month to travel after the main travel season was over. I think you will be fine if you go the 2nd or 3td week of Oct. Chances of hitting a snowstorm are pretty low and if you do the roads will be back to normal in a short period of time. All of the National Parks will still be open but most all the faciliies within the Parks close down shortly after labor day. You will be able to find facilities just outside most of the Parks. Price will certainly be lower that time of year for lodging. If you are going to Glacier NP and going over the historic Going to the Sun Road you may be taking a chance it will be closed at the summit pass.
Good Luck in your retirement and have a good trip if you go.

Some of the most relaxing trips we've ever taken were in the Dakotas just after Labor Day. No crowds, no real hot weather, Motels and resturants were more reasonable. We've been up thru there three times in the past thirty years and I look forward to doing it again. Enjoy your trip. Frank.
